Being an Account Delivery Lead¶
Making the delivery work, for the client and for the team.
What it is¶
The Account Delivery Lead is responsible for the successful delivery of an engagement. That means the client gets what they need, the team has what it needs, and the two stay in sync throughout.
It's the hat that sits closest to the work day to day. While the Account Owner manages the relationship and the Account Technical Lead owns technical quality, the Account Delivery Lead is running the engine: structure, approach, pace, and the people on the ground.
The role is typically worn by a Delivery Manager.
What you actually do¶
- Own the day-to-day delivery: team structure, ways of working, pace, and the client's visibility into all of it.
- Make sure the delivery approach fits the engagement: not just CDS defaults, but the right methods and tools for this client and this work.
- Build strong working relationships with client stakeholders on the ground: the people you're delivering with, not just the people above them.
- Keep the team set up to succeed: the right people, a clear structure, and a culture that holds together under pressure.
- Identify delivery risks and blockers early and escalate to the Account Owner when they need client-level involvement.
- Work closely with the Account Technical Lead to make sure delivery plans and technical solutions are pulling in the same direction.
- Spot opportunities for the account to grow, and work with the Account Owner to act on them.
What good looks like¶
The client always knows where things stand. The team is performing and the people on it feel supported. Delivery risks surface early, not late. You've built the kind of relationship with client stakeholders where difficult conversations happen before they become crises, not after.
What it isn't¶
It isn't technical leadership. That's the Account Technical Lead's space. It isn't the primary client relationship at senior levels. That's the Account Owner's. And it isn't the same as the Client Lead hat, even though it's often worn by the same person. The Client Lead supports the people on the team; the Account Delivery Lead is accountable for the delivery itself.
The honest bit¶
The Account Delivery Lead is often carrying a lot at once: delivery accountability, client relationships, team culture, and, usually, the Client Lead responsibilities for the people on the account. That's a real load, especially when things aren't going smoothly.
The behaviours it helps build are central to what we look for at Lead level and above: leadership, client obsession, people-first mindset, adaptability.
